Ice Fishing Huts

Finding a good place for ice fishing in Ontario can be difficult if you don't know where to go. People who have not been ice fishing in the past are under the impression that it is boring, you never catch fish and most of all it is freezing cold. Well that is not always the case. Take Springwoods lake for instance, Lake Kennebec. It has some fantastic Walleye and Pike action, right out front of the Springwood Cottages. It is not uncommon to go out for a day’s fish and everyone catches their limit of fish. Ice fishing is allotting more relaxing and lay back than summer fishing with the open water. The only time things get rough with ice fishing is when you catch a nice size fish. If it is open water like in the summer, the fish can swim all over the place in the lake and you would simply turn and move your rod with them from side to side, as you reel in. Not with ice fishing, think about it, the fish still has all the same amount of space to go from side to side, up down etc... You as an ice fisherman have one direction to reel that is up. Try fighting a fish with a 12 inch girth and pull him through a 10 inch hole. It can be done, not that it happens this way all the time, but if you get stuck where the fish is too big for the whole, start digging. Don't let him get away, having to fight the fish while trying to dig your hole wider, can be the most heart pounding excitement you could imagine. It gets really funny when you have a few people trying to help and everyone banging into each other tries to dig, I have seen many times when digging the whole the people cut the line. Especially, if you get the opportunity to see the tip of the fishes head in the hole and you know it is a big pickerel / walleye or even a big Northern Pike, that's just the beginning of the excitement.

Our ice Fishing Huts Are Close To the Cottages

Pulling a big northern Pike out of an ice fishing hole, is something totally different, than pulling out a pickerel or as some call it Walleye. Although the Walleye are supposed to be stronger fighters in the cold winter waters, they do not hold a candle to a big Pike. The Pickerel will come up to the top, like you just got caught up on a log. Not those green gators (Pike), they fight from start to finish. If your hole is too small to get the Pike through, then you are in for a fight to remember.Throw in a portable heater inside your ice fishing hut and you will be fishing in a t-shirt within no time at all. If you get the right size fishing hut, then you can play cards while waiting on a bite. Every now and then lean over and bounce your line up and down. When the fish hits your rod will pop up (if you have an ice fishing rod holder) or a bell would ring (if bell attached) then grab on and set the hook. The fight begins and you will see it is allot tougher than you think, even to bring up the little fish.

This Can Be You

PIKEIce fishing for Northern Pike is one of the most exciting species to target. They are aggressive predators. They will take almost anything you offer them, including ice transducers. (Voice of experience here :>) Most people use "tip-ups" when ice fishing for Northern Pike, although jigging will work also. Northern Pike tend to be loners, and are found anywhere in the water column. Fishing 1-4 feet just below the ice is a good place to start. Use large, sharp hooks. Northern Pike are toothy-creatures so if you want to actually land (ice) one, you will need a steel leader on the end of your ice fishing line. Watch those teeth if you actually land one. Those teeth can rip your hand up pretty bad and there are germs and bacteria in the saliva that can cause quite an infection. Sometimes the Northern Pike will just tug at your line...just a little. Play it out. Be careful that you have the right line and make sure that you have your drag set correct.WALLEYEIce fishing for walleye is relatively new to the scene. In fact new magazines are popping up all the time dedicated to fishing Walleye. Walleyes and sager are light sensitive and tend to bite best around dawn and dusk. They also tend to bite the best at first ice. Walleye are usually taken by jigging, although tip-ups are becoming more popular. Typical tackle consists of:
  • slip bobber rig
  • 6 to 8 lb line
  • split shot
  • hooked minnow
  • light to medium action rod
  • open faced spinning reel
Try different styles of jigging-start aggressive, then work your way down to subtle taps. Usually you will find something in-between works. PERCH Perch are closely related to the walleye. Some lakes tend to produce VERY large perch, commonly referred to as JUMBO perch. When ice fishing for perch, use a small jig or spoon and fish near the bottom-usually no more than one foot off the bottom. 6" is preferred. The key to catching perch under the ice is finding them. They tend to school together so if you find one, others should be nearby. When the perch are biting well, you may not need to bring your bait all the way down to the bottom again; usually the aggressive ones will meet your bait on the way down. During the early part of the season the perch should be in the flats.
